Private George Bell S/25831, 8th (Service) Battalion The Black Watch

George Bell was born in Kilspindie on 27th July 1898 to William and Jessie Bell.  In 1891 William was an agricultural worker and the family was living in Rait.  Ten years later they had moved again and were now at Sunnybrae Farm, Scone.  George attended Scone Public School.  After leaving education he was employed as a ploughman at Kinnochtry and Newmains Farms.  He enlisted into the Black Watch in May 1918 and was sent to France.  George was severely wounded in action in August 1918.  He was in hospital in Boulogne for 3 months, later transferred to St Luke’s Halifax, Glenwood Southowram, Perth and then Craigleith.  Private George Bell died of his wound at Craigleith Hospital, Edinburgh on 3rd August 1919.  He was 21 years old.  He was given a burial in Scone with full Military Honours.  He was awarded the Victory and British War medals.
