Private Arthur Cairns 29852, 1st Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers
Arthur Cairns was born on 17th September 1887 to James and Agnes Cairns, who married in Scone in 1892. Arthur was the younger of two boys. James was a Clerk and Agnes was a Nurse. Sadly, both parents died from tuberculosis within a year of each other. The boys appear to have gone to live in Dumfries, with an aunt and uncle. Arthur enlisted with the 1st Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers in 1915. He was mobilised to France and saw action in various battles on the Western Front. Private Arthur Cairns was wounded and died on 1st December 1917. He was 20 years old. He is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery. Arthur was awarded the Victory and British War medals.
