Private Charles McGregor 43166, 16th Battalion Highland Light Infantry (previously Highland Cyclist Battalion)
Charges McGregor was born on 17th July 1893 in Scone, Perthshire. His parents were James and Jane McGregor, who had married at Kettins, Angus. James was employed in various occupations including a coal salesman and a gardener. Charles was educated at Scone Public School, and then employed in a tobacconist shop in Perth. He joined the Army on 16th September 1914 and served with the coastal defences for a while. He was then drafted into the Highland Light Infantry, and on 16th July 1916 was sent to France. Private Charles McGregor was reported missing in action, presumed killed, on the 18th November 1916 at Beaumont Hamel. He was 23 years of age. He is remembered on the Theipval Memorial, Panel 15C. Charles was awarded the Victory and British War medals.

Charles was my great uncle. His brother James Alexander my maternal grandfather also served during WW1. Both born in Scone. I have so far been unable to discover what regiment he served. I know he received gun shots to the chest, he survived the war, but died in May 1932 due to complications of his war service.
