Private John Melville 302637, Royal Engineers.
John Melville was born at Ballthayock in the parish of Kinfauns on 19th February 1888. He was the fifth of eight children born to William and Margaret Melville. When John left school he was employed as a ploughman before emigrating to Australia, where he worked for eight years as a contractor. He enlisted with the Royal Engineers in July 1917 and was sent to Italy. Private John Melville died as a result of a severe attack of malaria on the 23rd October 1917. He was 29 years of age. He is buried in Taranto Town Cemetery. He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals.
