John Shearer Wilson Stalker was born in 1891. He was the first of 6 children born to John and Mary Stalker, who had married in Kirkintillock in April 1890. John senior was a Gamekeeper. The family seemed to have moved around the area depending on where John’s father worked. John enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery in August 1914. He was mobilised to France in March 1915 and involved in various action on the Western Front. Gunner John Shearer Wilson Stalker was “Killed in Action” on 17th August 1917, near Ypres, however there is little information on the circumstances surrounding his death. He was 26 years old. He is buried in the Brandhoek New Military Cemetery. John was entitled to the Star, Victory and British War medals, but these have never been issued.
