John Moir Bruce (known as Jack) was born on 4th April 1888. His parents, James and Mary Bruce, married in Forteviot in 1877 and had nine children.  The family lived in Guildtown and later in Scone.  Jack went to Guildtown Public School.  When war broke out he was employed as a builder’s traveller and at once offered himself for military service.  He was refused on physical/health ground but applied twice more and was finally accepted in August 1915, by which time medical requirements had been relaxed.  After completing his training he was sent to France.  Private John (Jack) Moir Bruce was killed in action on 15th July 1916, at Longuval.  He died four months before his elder brother Alexander, and although both died in the area of Longuval they are in different cemeteries.  Jack was 28 years old.  He was awarded the Victory and British War medals.
