Private Alexander McEwan 40221, 1st Battalion The Black Watch (previously Highland Cyclist Battalion)
The Scone Roll of Honour shows this gentleman’s name as Allistair, however all other records show he was called Alexander
Alexander McEwan was born in Stormontfield on 9th June to Agnes Fenwick McEwan, a Bleachfield worker. They lived with his grandparents, John and Jane McEwan. The family all worked in the textile industry. Alexander attended Stormontfield School and, on leaving education, also worked in the textile industry. He enlisted into the Highland Cyclist Battalion on 19th January 1915 but transferred to the Black Watch in July 1916. Alexander had only been in France for a few months when, around the middle of September 1916, he was wounded and taken to a field hospital. Private Alexander McEwan died on 29th September 1916 as a result of his wounds. He was 21 years of age. Alexander is buried in the St Sever British Cemetery, Plot B, Row 19, Grave 55. He was awarded the Victory and British War medals.
